And I've got two book reviews for you! But when you read a nearly 1,000 page book and are quilting and sewing as much as I have been these past few weeks it leaves much less time for reading.
I've actually been reading this since last year. I should say we have been reading it. This was the book our small group at church has been studying.
We've had this book since our pre-marital counseling classes at church. But we'd never read it. Stupid since it turned out to be a very good book with great insights.
The basic premise of the book is that each person has a "love language" or a way the they speak love to others and best receive other's love. Some people need verbal praise and affirmation of love. Some people respond best to gifts. Some people show their love by preforming acts of service for their loved one. The issue is that most couple's primary "love language" is not the same. So it is a poor use of time and energy to show love to our spouse in a way that means little to them.
It is also a great book not only for improving a couple's relationship, but for learning more efficient ways to connect and communicate love to anyone around us; children, friends, parents, co-workers, etc. I really enjoyed the book and would highly recommend it!
Book number two was my 996 page tome. And whilst I admit that it was quite long, and in a few places would not have suffered by, gasp, some abridgement I really loved it.
It's the story of a family, brother, sister and mother, who find themselves fallen on hard times after the death of their patriarch. They are country folk not acquainted with the big city of London or the more sinister ways of the wider world. They find their only relative, the dead father's brother, and thence begins the story.
The family is separated and taken advantage of in various situations. And while brother and sister work hard to do right and make the best of things, the stupid mother must be endured. She reminds me very much of Jane Austen's Mrs. Bennet; heart in the right place perhaps, but nevertheless ridiculous and the character that makes things harder than they need be.
There are travels, love affairs, intrigue, murder, sickness, bankruptcy, but in the end lessons learned and true friends. Take heart and plunge into this book knowing that the last 100 pages will make it worth it! Although there is much more that makes it worth it. Who doesn't love a villain by the name of Wackford Squeers or heroes by the name of the brothers Cheerable?

Baby Journal: Third Trimester!
Pregnancy #1
Month #7
Week #28 (2-16-14 – 2-22-14) Hello third trimester!
Weight Gain #1
Bump Ever bigger which I know is a good blessing, but I’m just not a fan of my own pregnancy belly. They’re much cuter on other people.
Baby Nicknames Bean. I hope this child is more calm after it’s arrival because it moves all the time! Especially at night…
Symptoms Tired and out of breath. Some small bouts of nausea. But! I’m finally off my daily regimen of Unisom for the nausea.
Cravings Nothing. More aversions than anything; chicken and meat in general just sound gross. Fish and rice and junk food are what sounds good.
Emotions
Sleep A little better than last week I think. My left side (rib area) pain eased up after a prenatal massage on Monday.
The big moment of the week Another doctor’s appointment and my glucose test. (They had to stick me twice because they ordered the labs wrong!) Happy birthday to me on Thursday! Did my first loads of baby laundry. Figured out our stroller. J built the rock and play sleeper.
Weather We were above freezing and saw the sun and had melting Monday – Wednesday! But it’s back to way below freezing again.

Lately
Thought I’d post some of my recent daily family emails since I haven’t in a while...

Happy Valentine’s Day. The sun is trying to come out this morning. No new snow, but it is very cold.
We ended up staying in last night instead of venturing out to the country club. I was exhausted after cleaning most of the house and J was tired as well. J made pancakes and bacon for dinner since I was so tired. Then we spent the entire evening watching all the Olympics that we had recorded.
This morning I am eating breakfast and trying to get a grocery list together; one if my least favorite chores!! I know it's pizza for dinner tonight though. :-)
I've got several more loads of laundry to do today. I also have Abbie’s baby quilt to continue work on. But I am either fighting another cold off, or over did it with flying home Wednesday and all the cleaning yesterday, so I may just end up on the couch reading this afternoon. We shall see. With all the traveling I've been doing it's a miracle I haven't caught the plague by now!
Our only weekend plans are church and going to see the Lego movie. Probably all on Sunday. And then surprise! Monday is a day off so we have a long weekend. Not sure what we are going to do with that…
Well, that's all the exciting news from the North. Hope everyone has a nice weekend.

We had a few inches of snow last night. But they say we're supposed to warm into the upper 30's today?! I see no sunshine, but I guess we will see later if we get some "heat". J is thrilled about having to shovel yet again.
Since J has the day off he's still laying in bed. I've been up to walk and eat. Just laying in bed isn't so comfortable for me any longer.
We had a good weekend. J helped unpack all the boxes of shower gifts and books. We also unpacked and figured out how to work the stroller. I am pretty excited about our stroller; the car seat clicks right in and works with it and the whole thing is very easy to use. Oh the things that excite you at certain stages of life. Most of the baby gear is all over the floor in the nursery for now. There is a big pile of baby laundry that needs done.
After church Sunday we went out to lunch and a movie. The Blue Moose is one of our favorite local restaurants and they have the most amazing appetizer called pub cheese snacks. Fried, cheesy and herb deliciousness. The Lego movie is pretty funny and we enjoyed it! Then we had small group in the evening and were back home watching the Olympics by the time the snow hit.
That's all I've got here. It’s probably time to start some of that laundry. I also have been and need to continue my quilting.

It was beautiful here yesterday. The sun came out and it made it above freezing! Things were melting and we had our windows open. Just hearing the quiet drip, drip of melting snow is a real luxury. It's supposed to be mid 30's again today, even a bit warmer tomorrow. More sunshine and more melting. Bring it on!!
I'm heading to town shortly. Bible study and stops at the library and Sam's Club are on my agenda. Jared is flying this morning. I have laundry to do, Olympics to watch and a quilt to work on later today.
(J never naps, but he was worn out today! So handsome.)

I had a productive day yesterday. The laundry was full of baby clothes; quite a change! I would just like to state for the record that our baby has 8 Ohio State onesies and a jersey already. This makes J particularly happy.
After making an inventory of all the baby items we had while doing the laundry I also made a few orders for additional baby items thanks mostly to baby shower gift cards. We got a changing pad, and cover, crib sheets, some gowns and socks, and a few first aid items. There are still items we need, but we also have more gift cards left.
J also built the rock and play sleeper last night. Slowly but surely we are getting ready. Today it's more quilting for me! I did some yesterday and it's coming together quickly. :-) Just got to keep plugging away. We also need to get our taxes out in the mail today and the car registration renewed on the lease. Exciting I know.
J is back in the office after flying yesterday.
We are supposed to be above freezing again today with some sunshine. I will take it! Every tiny bit that melts is hopeful. And the days are definitely longer which is wonderful. At 6pm last night it was still light, and it was light before 8am today. Hooray!
Well, I'm off to exercise and quilt. May even make a grocery run for eggs to make myself a birthday angel food cake this afternoon. (I got strawberries at Sam's.)
Friday, February 21, 2014 Well my birthday is over. I just remembered that last year on my birthday we were moving. So despite 2 blood draws, a doctor's appointment and a meeting, this year was much better! Adult birthdays are not quite as fun it would seem. J took me out to dinner at the club (he had a steak and I had walleye, but maybe best of all we got mozzarella sticks and cokes). When we got home he lit a candle in my cake and sang me ‘happy birthday’. I had several phone calls, quite a few text messages and lots of salutations on Facebook.
I guess our short preview of spring is completely over. We woke up this morning to –2 degrees, feels like -23 with wind chill and blowing snow advisories. Fantastic... But it is blessedly sunny out!
I cleaned the kitchen and laundry room yesterday. I am going to tackle our bed and bath today along with some dusting and laundry.
We have no big weekend plans here. I'm sure I will be quilting a bunch. Church and our small group as usual on Sunday. Watching the final weekend of Olympics.
Pizza tonight! Now to figure out if I actually need to go to the grocery before Monday... I'm over food. Unfortunately Jared still wants to eat every day?!
Everyone should come on over and help me finish my cake!

And here ends my daily emails from last week. Today is just a blog entry. It’s a beautiful day! Blue sky and sunshine. But it’s freezing, so it’s been a good day to stay inside streaming BBC mini-series from Amazon Prime, drinking hot tea, munching girl scout cookies and sewing. I have gotten a lot done on Abbie’s baby quilt! I’m thinking I may get very close to finishing the top of it tomorrow. That means it’s time to get batting and figure out how I’m going to quilt this thing, or if I’m going to have it quilted… Decisions.

Niece’s baby quilt: Part II
Now begins the sewing. The sewing itself is not difficult (straight lines people!); but the directions state that this part of the quilt design is "free form" and "up to the quilter". There is no definite pattern or measurements or instructions to follow.
I am not a free form type of gal, I like definite instructions. So this part scared me, but again, not because there was complicated sewing involved.
Take one 5” white square. Take one colored triangle. Place the pieces right sides together. (See my photos for fabric placement before sewing.)

Sewing the points for your stars
Take one 5” white square. Take one colored triangle. Place the pieces right sides together. (See my photos for fabric placement before sewing.)
The angle at which you place your triangle and the amount of white fabric it covers is up to your discretion.
My sister didn’t want uniform star points, she liked the idea of various angles and a more homemade or patchwork look. So you will see that my angles of cutting and sewing vary block to block.
While no seam allowance was indicated I worked, as always, with a 1/4 inch.
**A few tips:
- Keeping in mind your seam allowance, ensure that when you sew your colored triangle to your white square that the triangle completely covers the white square. This becomes very important later!
- Sew several triangles on at different angles and covering various amounts of the white square. Then before cutting, press back your colored triangle to ensure it covers the white square and that you like it.
You can always rip your seam and reposition and sew at this stage. (Did that more than once…)
- You will eventually be trimming this block back to a 5” square, thus loosing a portion of colored fabric.
Ensure you have enough colored fabric within the final 5” block to work well as a star point.
These first points will become the bottom points, you will be sewing another colored triangle on this square.
Now for a bit more cutting and ironing.
Once you are certain the triangle has been sewn on in a way that completely covers the white square beneath it when folded back, cut off the white fabric beneath the colored triangle.
Then press this seam, towards the star point or colored fabric. You will now have an oddly angled colored triangle hanging off the edges of your white square.

Next you will be doing the exact same thing again!
Chose another colored triangle. Place it on your block ensuring it crosses the first triangle you sewed on and that with a seam allowance it will completely cover it’s part of the 5” white square. (See my photos for placement again here.)
After sewing, you again follow the same steps to cut and press as indicated above.
Congratulations, these are your star points! They can be as uniform as you’d like, or as “wonky” as you’d like depending on how you placed and sewed them.
Last step in this process is to square up your point blocks. As I mentioned earlier we must trim these blocks back to a 5” square.
Use a quilting ruler and/or mat to trim away the odd angles so you are left with 48 5” blocks.
All this took me about two days. Working with various colors and prints it was a bit time consuming to try and ensure things looked as varied as possible. So a chunk of my time here was playing with and mismatching various fabrics before sewing.
I worked just as I laid out the instructions; sew, cut, press and repeat on all 48 blocks. I think it takes a lot less time than doing one block at a time from start to finish.
Next up: Piecing together the large star blocks!

Baby Shower
These are the pictures from my camera. My cousin Anna took them. I also had a friend at the shower, Carey, who took pictures. But my pregnancy brain left that disk of pictures in Ohio at Mom’s house so I’ll have to post them in a later segment.
The shower was a brunch at Brookside Country Club. We did things pretty non-traditionally. Instead of embarrassing and awkward shower games followed by hours of staring at the guest (in this case guests) of honor opening gifts, my Mom introduced and welcomed, our cousin Anna opened in prayer, we ate a fabulous brunch of muffins, fruit and quiche. The guests brought gifts unwrapped and they were displayed on two different tables.
So my sister and I actually got to eat, visit and enjoy the morning. It was perfect! Elegant, low-key, relaxing, and conducive to real conversation with people we, or at least I, don’t often get to see.

Some photos with family and friends.
Abbie with her college friend Ann. Momma and Aunt Mary. J’s family and I: cousin Gabrielle, Aunt Faith, me, Aunt Mary, Barbara and Cathy. The Haring side of the family: Patty, Jamie, Abbie, Me, Linda, Kristi, Sue, Christina, Momma & Ashlee.

Our dear cousin Anna who came with her Mom from Indiana and spent the whole weekend in town. She prayed for us at the beginning in place of Grandma P. who was going to write a prayer since she couldn’t have come, but didn’t get to that before she passed away in December. It was very special.
