We've Moved ... Again! :)
We spent the rest of the day Friday unpacking boxes, stuffing massive amounts of packing paper into industrial sized trash bags and cutting down cardboard moving boxes to put into the dumpster. It was nice to have our things back and go through boxes and find some friends (tea kettle, mixer, TV, cozy blankets, etc.) but at the same time it was a bit disheartening because we know that we will be doing all this again in just a few short months. (Well, at least we hope so! We really want to live on base).
The kitchen here is incredibly small! Without question the smallest kitchen we have had so far. Very little counter space, not much storage and the smaller, apartment sized versions of appliances. So a lot of my kitchen is still in half packed boxes in our garage. But we’ve got the essentials, which is all that really matters. Just don’t expect any fancy dinner parties if you come and visit over the summer!
We left lots of home décor items, knick-knacks, photos, etc. packed away because well, we didn’t feel like unpacking everything just for six months! Along with all those items, my gardening supplies, the microwave and the washer/dryer are all in our garage. No place in the apartment for any of it. Sigh … but it is only a temporary sigh!
Friday night was still pizza night! We ordered Papa John’s and sat on the floor in the middle of mountains of boxes and ate it right out of the box and had Coke right out of the bottle.
Saturday Jared and I continued to plow through the boxes, sort through things, find places to put items away, etc. There were many trips up and down the stairs (we live on the second floor) between the apartment and the garage. Thank goodness the garage isn’t very far away! But still, dish packs are huge and heavy and we used the Terrain to haul some of the boxes back and forth.
Saturday night we took a little break and went out to dinner at Olive Garden with another copilot Jared has been getting to know at work. His girlfriend is at Wisconsin studying medicine and had flown in to see him for the weekend. So we met up with them and had a nice time.
Sunday we slept! Despite being exhausted on Friday, neither one of us got a very good night’s rest the first night in the new place. We sure slept on Saturday night though! By Sunday there wasn’t a whole lot left to finish. Just little things and we got those done fairly quickly. We had homemade waffles and then we sat on our wonderful couch the rest of the day watching Indiana Jones! Best day of the entire weekend.
Now it is Monday. I’m writing this in Word and will copy it over to our blog tomorrow once we have internet back. I went to the post office, two libraries (I finally got my card for the one in town and picked up some books I had on hold there!) and did the weeks shopping. Now I am trying to motivate myself to do at least three miles this afternoon before Jared gets home from work and wants his dinner.
And I must add that tonight’s dinner is chicken and stuffing with homemade bread! It is so nice to have my things back and be able to cook the way that I want to. And tomorrow night’s dinner is the monthly menu! (Mom, Abbie and I are taking turns creating a new menu each month, and then we all make it. It’s fun!) So I am really excited about that.
That’s about it for now from the new Scherff household! We are supposed to be getting a nasty Pacific storm tonight that will be around for a few days. So I am doubly thankful to be in the new place, settled, cozy and within easy reach of a good book, comfy chair and a good cup of tea!

The Circus
I seriously feel like a roaming nomad, or maybe a vagabond. Or maybe that isn't the correct terminology?
Needless to say, I am beyond tired of this never-ending move! I mean, we have been "moving" since December of last year!
Unfortunately this move wont be totally over for a few more months. The best guesstimate we have is another 6 more months until we can get into base housing. Big sigh. That will mean this giant move will have, in total, taken around 10 months.
So anyway, enough whining and complaining!! (It's because I've spent most of this beautiful draft day not outside and not watching the draft. Instead I've been running around, doing laundry and packing.) We are finally making a semi-permanent move into an apartment here in California and getting all of our household goods back! It's been 4 months since we've seen it.Since this part of the move will most likely be around 6 months long that means we can get somewhat settled again. We'll have all of our clothes back, our own bed again, my kitchen will be in order, etc. So that is all happy and positive! And we do not have to move ourselves on base come fall, the Military will do it, so that's also good. A hassle, but good.
At the base spouse orientation program last week I met the base commander for the second time and he asked us wives if we had any suggestions about his base? Well, of course I did! I told him we needed more housing! He said they are building it. I told him I knew, I even quoted him the construction schedule and then told him once again, we needed more housing. Not sure if he knew what to think of me. :)
So, on to move number 3, part 4! We wont have any cable/Internet at the new place until next week (Tuesday the 27th) so until then, have a great weekend. And think of us unpacking...

Going Green: the beginnings
"For as the soil makes the sprout come up and a garden causes seeds to grow, so the Sovereign LORD will make righteousness and praise spring up before all nations." - Isaiah 61:11
While I was at Mom's after Christmas I went a little crazy at the library. One of the many books that I read was Fresh Living by Sara Snow. I LOVED IT. Jared thinks I am a little crazy, but that book has really inspired me to "go green" as they say.
Before we moved from Oklahoma I had already started tinkering in homemade cleaning products and "green" cleaners from the store. Shockingly enough for this germ-a-phobe I found that the new, greener products worked as well if not better than my old standards. Intrigued, I began to investigate.
Now that we are living in California living greener has suddenly become much easier. So much food here, even in the commissary, is local and fresh and organic! I have also seen more options for organic home cleaning products. The local farmers markets will be opening here in another week or so and a local health and natural foods store has already been recommended to me.
With the move it is a great time to start replacing items, foods, etc. with greener, more organic and local items. Jared still thinks I am insane, but I am personally pretty excited about it!
Just wanted to share the link to the book (below). And check out her website! She has a great blog as well.

Moving, TVs and Palm Trees
Today has been a mix of grey clouds and sunshine and lots of wind. This evening the grey clouds have taken over, the wind has picked up and the temperature has dropped. A storm is on the way. It is supposed to rain and stay cool for the next two days.
But I wont mind the rain one bit! Because I got a firm date from the moving company today. We will be in the apartment on Friday. I am, we are, so excited! I think I may literally kiss my tea pot and mixer. Jared is very anxious to see his TV once again. However, we are not getting our Internet or cable hooked up until Tuesday the 27th so it will be a weekend of movies.
The only bad part about the move being Friday is that it interferes with a class Jared needs to take to be mission qualified (ie. fly out of the country for their typical TDY which is a 10-15 day trip). Since he's missing this class he has to wait until the end of May to take it. He's bummed... and I guess I am bummed for him. But I am not bummed that he'll be home a bit longer to help me get things set up and familiar with the new place and area. Selfish I know.
I called the apartment complex to let them know we needed to push the move-in date up and then I called the electric/gas company to move the turn on date. More checks on the never ending to do list.
In other news, we had a nice weekend. Oddly enough we spent most of it shopping?! (We are not shoppers!) However, there was the odd errand that needed we needed to do which turned into our first trip to the outlet stores in Vacaville (Mom, Abbie when are you coming?) and getting our Sam's Club membership.
I had forgotten how much I loved Sam's Club! We lived too far away from one in Oklahoma to make keeping our membership there worth while. So Saturday we browsed ... for a long while. We ended up with quite a major purchase as well: a new flat screen TV for our bedroom. It's a little one, but it is replacing the old TV that I left in the guest room at Mom's. We also got a DVD player to go with it. We don't actually watch much TV in our bedroom, but I don't think I could live without it so I can watch movies at night when Jared is gone.
Oh yes, and even more important than the TV, I found our palm tree! I've been saying for months now that when we get to California I am buying a little palm tree. Well, they sell them at Sam's. =D I have a spot on our deck that will be just prefect for it!

The moving guy called!
I am super excited to get our stuff back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So anyway, the rest of the day was taken up by the base wide spouse orientation that I attended. It was nice, met some very nice people but I was the only fliers wife there. Oh well! We took a bus tour around the base (most of the places I have already been to) and got some base information (most of which I already have) and then got a free lunch at the club.
I did get to see outdoor rec for the first time. They have tons to do, lots of sports and various outdoor equipment for rent and they takes tons of trips (everything from white water rafting to surfing to wine tasting). I also went to the base fitness center/HAWC (health and wellness center) for the first time. It is ginormous! But they have some pretty neat classes and services there; you can even get a personal trainer for $30/hour!
Lunch at the club was.... alright. The club is big and it's nice, the food was OK. Not sure if we'll become members or not. I met the base commander (again) and also met the NCO commanders wife. She was super nice.
So, all in all it was a nice day and better than sitting in TLF! But I am really glad that I went to the orientation with Jared (yup, only wife there! Go me!) because I felt like I learned a little more there and got some more helpful details.
Haven't seen Jared all day. He had to check in with the flight doc, get a shot (which he texted me to cry about) and is currently simming. Hoping he gets out of his sim at a decent hour so that we can have PIZZA!!
And that's about it for today ... oh yeah! They serve unsweetened ice tea out here. Hooray!
PS, I went to a spouse social for our new squadron last night. It was pretty fun, met more nice people and am looking forward to making some friends!

People to meet, places to be!
Oh wait, yes I do! Yesterday was... interesting to say the least. It started with me calling the people who were supposed to be releasing our household goods from non-temp (or long term) storage. It had been over a week since my initial call and .... nothing. (Please imagine crickets in the background here). Well yesterday they told me, "Um.... your stuff has already been released mam. It's already on a truck." to which I responded "Ooookay then. Was anyone going to tell me? Could I have the information to contact the driver so I'll know when he will be in California?" I do not know why, but every single time I call to follow up with a government organization, who happens to be controlling some part of our life, I continue to be utterly amazed at their total ineptness. So I called the moving company, and after clearing up a few minor details (like them not having our apt. number or cell phone...?!) I was told the driver should be here on the 24th and no later than the 26th. You had better believe I will be calling the moving company several more times before the 24th!
Well, since I had as firm a moving date as we are going to get I decided to get some other things set up yesterday. I called and cancelled DirectTV!!!!! I could just sing and dance I am so happy to be rid of them. And we signed up for Comcast for our TV and Internet. We had them in Delaware and LOVED them. And hey, we even get the Big Ten Network all the way out here, and in HD!! All that is scheduled to be turned on at our apartment on the 27th.
I also scheduled the electric/gas to be turned on (the 24th) and set up a start date for us to get mail at the new place as well.
Oh, and I almost forgot! Someone dinged our brand new car. A nice dent on the top of the drivers side rear tire well. Even scratched off the paint. Anyway, we spent about an hour at the dealership in Vacaville getting it fixed. Looks a hundred times better now! But man, our poor car. :(
Dinner last night was nice. We went to a place called BJs Brewhouse, only got as far as root beer, but had some great food. It was also nice to see Moira and meet their new little boy Daniel. They adopted him from Korea and he is a real cutie! Just turned 2. She works as a librarian out here and seems to know quite a few wives and asked me to come over for a girls dinner sometime. It also sounds like, from her, that when the squadron is back and running normally again it might not be as bad as I had anticipated. She said that they all rotate desk jobs, and when they don't have one and are not flying they are home. She said she has seen quite a bit of her husband since they have been here. that is good news! The squadrons last day of deployment is June 30th, so they will probably be back sometime in July.
As for today, Jared is in a staff meeting right now and I am baking chicken for Luke casserole tonight. We are going to eat a bit early because I am headed over to the squadron for a spouse social event. Wine and cheese tasting. I am hoping to meet some new friends! I am bringing strawberries. (Which I got at the commissary for 99 cents a container!)
Tomorrow is going to be a BUSY day. Jared has his flight physical in the morning and a Sim in the afternoon. I am going to the base wide spouse orientation in the morning. But it's pizza night! YES!

Rain, rain go away...
But when you aren't home, rainy days are just rainy days. I feel so cooped up and tired of the gloom. Here I can sorta make tea (no tea pot and no big cozy mugs), play some music on the laptop (not quite the same as the surround sound system), but there are no candles and no soft, cozy blankets. And although I am so thankful for the kitchen facilities we do have, there is also no homemade bread or soup.
Basically, I am ready to hear something from someone about our household goods being released from non-temp. storage.... SOON!! I would like to know when we can actually move into the apartment in town so I can try and set up a few things, like the TV and the power! :)
I hate waiting.

San Francisco =D
Basically, San Francisco is the equivalent of driving up to Cleveland back home. (Just more traffic.) However, even in the traffic department we lucked out and didn't have any issues either coming or going! There is a ton more that we want to do and see (and eat!) there, but it was a good first trip. We can't wait to have visitors to take on trips!
Our life together begins
